Alcohol: here’s to your health.

Woodford Reserve, alcohol, good for you, new food pyramid Could it be true? According to David J. Hanson, Ph.D., most alcoholic beverages contain all 13 minerals necessary to sustain human life. If you’re a bourbon, or more appropriately a bourbon lover, this is like winning the lottery of tying “pleasurable” directly with “good for you.” Pondering this notion over a particularly smooth splash of Woodford Reserve in a crystal cocktail glass, I wondered which of these minerals I was replenishing my vitals with? A quick look online turned up some of the big boys: calcium, chlorine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulfur…Sulfer? I could probably do without so much of that. But what the heck. It all comes as a package deal.

Hungry for more? At his site Alcohol Problems and Solutions, Dr. Hanson goes on to say that distilled spirits, such as the one I’m holding, contain no carbohydrates, no fats of any kind, and no cholesterol. So now you can pour a shot of your favorite bourbon, take a tender first sip and say literally “Not bad.”

Of course, if you’re one of these more in the camp of diet and exercise, you’ll want to take this newfound knowledge with you as you hit the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky. You can sample Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam and scores of others. For some reason, they seem bent on keeping it a secret. Something you have to discover for yourself. As an advertiser, I’ve committed my entire working life to communication. And as a writer, a bit of it to drinking. So I have no problem whatsoever letting this very cool cat out of the bag.

Don’t know if you’re inspired yet to put that bottle of bourbon on the self next to the vitamins, but it’s good to know there’s a worthwhile place for it in your life – just to keep things interesting. Here’s to a little Kentucky-style diet and exercise. HooHaaaaa.
